The Table I Was Never Welcome At

For the ones who were never invited

If this stirs something in you, please share it — someone else might enjoy it too.

I place my hand on my heart,
never could I imagine how hard this would be to part.

I stand before you open and bare,
afraid,
afraid,
but not of the dark or what I might hear,
rejection I fear,
as though a petal has fallen from its branch.

I grasped to the longing,
the wanting,
the knowing.

The knowing that I didn't make it,
didn't make it for lunch,
didn't make it for brunch,
for I was never good enough to sit at your table,
and share with you through the fun
or the rough.

I place my hand on my heart.
Never could I imagine how hard this would be to part.
I wonder if you'll ever read this,
and if you do,
I hope you shed a tear or two.

It was you who lost me,
for you were never mine to lose you.
